Report on ScotLibTM

Lucy Carroll, one of the ScotLibTM organisers, has written a report about the ScotLibTM event.

We hope this is useful for both attendees and for those who couldn’t make it along on the day.

This time next week…

This time next week, we’ll be on our way to the first Library TeachMeet in Scotland!  We’ve been overwhelmed by the number of people signing up to do presentations.  Topics include:

  • First impressions: spicing up your welcome/induction session using Cephalonian technique and library lotto
  • Ssssh, the students are sleeping – using a library crossword in an induction session for international students
  • Information literacy game
  • Colour-coding referencing guidelines
  • Spot the mistake exercise

Attendee places are still available so if you were thinking you’d have to present to attend, here is your opportunity to meet new people and share ideas without having to present.  Please book your place via http://scotlibtm.eventbrite.com/ by Friday 15 July at the latest.

We visited the new look library at Stirling University campus last week.  The Enterprise Zone – situated in the library – is amazing with a stunning view across the loch and as has all the facilities we could wish for.

What is a TeachMeet?

Library TeachMeets are an opportunity for librarians to learn from other librarians.   We will be hosting a Library TeachMeet in Scotland on 20th July (book here).  There will be short presentations (2 minutes and 7 minutes), lots of opportunity for discussion and networking, plenty of cake, and maybe drinks afterwards too!

Photo of cupcakesTeachMeets were originally started by teachers, and now librarians are also meeting up to share their own teaching experiences at (lib)TeachMeets.  This video, produced for a Teachers TeachMeet in Perth last year, outlines the ideas behind TeachMeets.

Recent LibTeachMeets have included Brighton, Newcastle, and Cambridge.  Some LibTeachMeets, including Cambridge, have videoed the presentations.  If you have a teaching idea that you’d like to share at the Library TeachMeet in Scotand you can sign up to give a presentation.

ScotLibTM – book here

We’re organising a Library TeachMeet in Scotland on 20th July.  A Library TeachMeet is an informal get together for librarians from all sectors to share ideas and experiences of teaching.  This short video explains the idea – it’s about librarians learning from librarians.

The Scottish event will be held at Stirling University Library in Stirling, and will be video-conferenced to the Highland Health Sciences Library in Inverness.  (Presentations can take place at either location.)

For Stirling participants, there will also be an optional tour of the newly refurbished Stirling University Library before the event, and some of us will be staying on for drinks in the MacRobert afterwards.

We welcome anyone who wants to attend, but please consider signing up for a presentation – the event will only work if we get plenty of speakers!

As we are restricted by room size, we may need to put a limit on the number of delegates from the same organization – you might want to discuss this with your colleagues before booking.

Date & Time:

Wednesday 20th July 1pm-4pm

Location:

Stirling University Library (Stirling) and Highland Health Sciences Library (Inverness)

Cost:

FREE!
